Healing after a loss

When you lose a loved one, it can feel like your world turns upside down. Whether it was a sudden and unexpected loss or anticipated, your heart breaks, and you may feel as though a part of you died with them. If you find yourself in this place, let me first start by saying, "I'm so sorry," but I know there is nothing anyone can do or say to make the pain go away. That will take time, and it involves a grieving process you must traverse, but I promise you will emerge on the other side with the healing you need to continue on. If you're just beginning your grief journey, this article will give you some tools to help you find healing after your loss.

The Grieving Process

There is no right or wrong way to grieve, it's personal to everyone, and no two journeys are the same. Although there is no timetable or set way that grieving shows itself, there are a few things you can do to make the process easier.

Be Kind With Yourself

Being kind with yourself during this process is key; you must give yourself grace to not be ok. Some days and moments will be easier, while others can feel completely overwhelming. Remember, grief can feel like a roller coaster at times, and it's ok for you to take as long as you need to process it.

Let Yourself Feel

We tend to shut down when faced with intense negative emotions, but this can prolong the grieving process. Let yourself really feel all your emotions, good, bad, or indifferent. Opening yourself up will allow you to fully process and move forward.

Talk To Others

Opening up to others is very therapeutic and can help you navigate confusing and intense emotions. It may feel easier to isolate yourself, but doing so will only make you feel worse in the long run. You don't have to constantly tell your feelings to everyone you see, but having a trusted confidant that you can be completely open and vulnerable with is priceless.

Lean On A Support System

This point goes along with the previous one, as having a strong support system is key. It may be family or friends but having those you can rely on that are there for you no matter what makes the grieving process more manageable. For those in the funeral planning stage, having a funeral home with understanding and caring staff can bring positivity into such a painful experience.
