Wilbur L. Herndon went home to be with the Lord on December 11, 2024, in Canton, MI at the age 88.

Wilbur was born in Charleston, West Virginia, to his parents, Jesse and Geraldine Herndon.

He spent his early years in Dunbar West Virginia, where he graduated from Dunbar High School. From there he joined the Air Force and lived in Kissimmee, Florida. Eventually he would settle in Ypsilanti, Michigan during his working years.

Wilbur devoted 24 years as a Youth Specialist for the State of Michigan. He worked at the W.J. Maxey Boys training School in Whitmore Lake before retiring in 1989.

After retirement, Wilbur moved up to Mesick, Michigan for a few years before returning to metro Detroit area.

Faith played an important role in Wilbur's Life. As a dedicated member of Ypsilanti Baptist Temple, he was baptized and saved. Spending time reading the Bible was one of the things he found a lot of joy in.

Staying active was important to him and he would often walk four to five miles a day. Football was another passion of his. He loved watching football whether it was NFL, UFL or college football. He never really rooted for any particular team, just found watching the game entertaining.

Being a Veteran, Wilbur was a member of the American Legion where he enjoyed spending time with his friends. Wilbur was also an animal lover and owned many pets over the years.

He is survived by his sons, William Herndon and Gary (Susan) Herndon. Step-children, Mark Terry, Lori (Pete) Yuhas, Cindy (Larry) Byram and Craig Terry.

Grandchildren, Aubrey (Miguel) Tyler, Austin (Kendra), Mikayla and Jace. Step-grandchildren, Rebecca, Michael Jr. and Crystal.

Also survived by many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Lois and second wife Ardith. His son Michael, step-son Lee Terry, granddaughter Lois Marie, great granddaughter Elizabeth and siblings, James and Charlene.

Though we will miss him, we can take comfort knowing he is safe in the arms of the Lord.
