Warren Neil Matthews

Age 85, passed away at home with his family by his side Monday, May 22, 2023. He was born August 10, 1937 in Marquette, MI, the only child of Joseph and Charlotte (Kipling) Matthews.

Warren grew up in Ishpeming, MI and graduated from Ishpeming High School. He was an excellent basketball player and went on to play for the United States Air Force which he joined at the young age of 17.  While in the Air Force, he fondly remembers the times he had in San Antonio, TX and later at Yale University when the Air Force sent him to attend the Far Eastern Language Institute where he learned to read, write and speak Korean. After his military service, Warren attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI where he obtained his Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Education and later his Ed.S. from Eastern Michigan University (Go Hurons!).

Warren was a proud Yooper and loved fishing, with trout being his favorite. He received a Master Angler Award for catching a native lake trout that weighed 29 lbs. and is proudly displayed at the family cabin. Warren enjoyed activities with his family, especially his grandkids.  He also enjoyed going to the movies, listening to live music of which jazz was his favorite, and was known to take a trip or two to the casino, where his favorite game was Wheel of Fortune. He was a member of the Four Freshman Fan Club and loved the Green Bay Packers.

Warren spent a good part of his career as an 8th grade math teacher at Slauson Middle School in Ann Arbor, MI. He was passionate about helping young minds really understand math and co-authored several math books.  He was also a math teacher at Washtenaw Community College and for about 15 years was a MEEMIC insurance agent.

Warren married Suzanne K. Morrison on January 4, 1960, and she survives. He is also survived by his children; Lian Lloyd, Kevin (Karen) Matthews and Greg (Mattie Doss) Matthews; eight grandchildren; Alexander Lloyd, Lydia Lloyd, Maxwell Trewin, Nicole (Tim) Stachelski (and their children, Ella, Claire, and Sydney), Christian (Brittany) Matthews, Alaina (Adam Rathbun) Matthews, Augustus Neil and Elijah Neil. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Heidi Ann Neil.

Visitation will be at Stark Funeral Professionals in Ypsilanti on Saturday, May 27, 2023 from 5-7 pm followed by a short funeral service at 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice in memoriam.
