Age 84, departed this life the 15th day of December, 2023 at 7:43 pm. He was born July 15, 1939 in Martin, Kentucky, the son of John Lee and Shirley (Branham) Garrett. On February 11, 1960 he married Judy Whitten in Prestonsburg, Kentucky and she preceded him in death. Vernon was employed at General Motors Willow Run Plant for over 30 years, retiring in 1990. Vernon was also employed by Stark Funeral Service for over 30 years, a job he truly loved. After retiring due to his health, it would bring such joy when he was out in public when families he had helped during his time at Stark would come up to him and let him know how much he meant to them during their time of need. He attended Trinity Free Will Baptist Church where he severed as a deacon for many years and Belleville Free Will Baptist Church for many years.

Vernon is survived by his children, Carolyn (Rex) Thornsberry, Debbie (Ed) Vasas and Vernon Jr. (Angie), all of Ypsilanti; grandchildren and step-grandchildren whom he loved very much, Adraya (Evan) Van Dyk, Adriana (Spencer) Batton, Shelby Thornsberry, Aidan Garrett, Shaun (Barb Vasas), Billy (Ashley) Vasas, Bobby Vasas, Zach (Ashley) Brockette and great-grandchildren; Preston, Jerry, Noah, Katlynn, Sophie, Keegan, Thomas, Alara, Cole, Harper, and Evie. Cierra Jo will be coming soon. He is also survived by brother-in-law Roger (Shirley) Watts and sisters-in-law Mary and Linda Whitten; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his loving wife of 49 years, he was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Virginia Watts, Jane Harris, brother-in-law Larry Harris, Denny Whitten, Phillip Whitten, Robert Whitten and sister-in-law Janet Whitten.

The family will receive friends at Stark Funeral Professionals, 101 S. Washington St. Ypsilanti on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 from 4-8 pm with a time for sharing at 7:00pm and Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 2-8 pm with a time for sharing and music at 6:00pm. The funeral service will be Friday, December 22, 2023 at 11 am with visitation beginning at 10 am at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, 410 Oregon St. Ypsilanti, Michigan 48198, with Rev. Walker Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park. Memorial Contributions in Vernon's memory may be made to Trinity Free Will Baptist Church Camp Meeting.  www.starkfuneral.com
