Age 82, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at her home. She was born April 13, 1941 in Halifax County, VA, the daughter of Otis and Nannie (Poole) Johnson.

Vernessa was a member of New Hope Tabernacle Church of God in Christ under Michigan Southwest Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. She worked as a custodial training supervisor at the University of Michigan for 21 years prior to retirement. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, baking, and sewing. She loved teaching children, serving and teaching in ministry, and traveling.

Vernessa is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn Moore of Raleigh, NC; eldest son, Derwin Jones of Ypsilanti, MI; youngest son Edwin (Tina) Jones of Harrisonburg, VA; grandchildren Duane Jones, Keyante' Jones, Jacqueline Jones, LaTiana Jones, Shanice Brumfield, Dylan Roper, Jasmine Jones, Ray Reeves Jr., Shemaiah Reeves, and Jayden Bond; great-grandchildren KaMariea, Israel, Marcus, Amario, Brooklyn, Sanai, DeMarien, Demi and Isaiah; and sister Dorothy Johnson of Roxboro, NC.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Aldin Reeves; grandson Isaiah Jones; parents Otis Johnson, Sr. and Nannie Poole-Johnson; sisters Myrtle Cunningham and Rosa Griffin; and brother Otis Johnson, Jr.

A funeral service will be held 11 am Friday, August 4, 2023 at Greater Seth Temple Sanctuary of Praise Church of God in Christ (28125 Grand River Avenue, Farmington Hills). Family Hour will begin at 10 am. The family will receive friends 4-7 pm Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Stark Funeral Professionals (101 S. Washington Street, Ypsilanti). Vernessa will be laid to rest in Union-Udell Cemetery, Ypsilanti Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Foundation.
