Teresa Leigh Howe Bartholomew , "Terri", was a beloved and active figure in the life of Ann Arbor. Born in Chicago on June 16, 1927 to Margaret Washington Backus and Hamilton Wilcox Howe (later to become Rear Admiral), as a child she traveled extensively as a daughter of a Naval Officer, living in China for part of her youth. She moved to Ann Arbor in 1959 with her husband, Lee Enderlin Bartholomew (whom she later divorced) and two small children; two English Springer Spaniels came later into the family. She earned an A.B. at the College of William and Mary (English major with Honors) and an M.A. in Education at Columbia University Teachers' College (Highest Honors) and taught first grade for five years. Later, she received training at the U-M Institute for Social Research and achieved a license in escrow in Real Estate.

She was in the inaugural class of docents at the University of Michigan Museum of Art and on the docent Board of Directors and continued for many years to give tours. She was Secretary of the Ann Arbor Historical Foundation, and involved in marketing and distribution of several publications, and also on their Board of Directors. She was on the Board of Directors at the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop, and actively volunteered at that organization for a number of years.

She was active in U-M's Faculty Women's Club (Newcomers Chair, Executive Committee and Board of Directors, Social Committee, Program Chair, Ballroom Dances Series Chair and Square Dance Group Treasurer. She was also Secretary, Treasurer, Social Chair, Scholarship Chair, President, and Cook Chair at the U-M Waterman Alumnæ Group. She was on the Board of Directors of U-M's Henderson House (Alumni Council).

She assumed roles of Secretary, Treasurer, and President of the local Pi Beta Phi Alumnæ chapter. At the Ann Arbor Women's City Club, she was active on the House Committee, Chair of the Art Committee (helping to mount exhibitions for a number of years), and on their Board of Directors, and also was classes chair and involved in home touring.  In the Questers Antiques Club, she held roles of Secretary, Vice-President, and President. She was formerly Membership Chair, Program /Social Chair, and First Vice-Regent at the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was the Education Chair and Assistant Presiding Partner of an Investment Club, and a member of a local Bridge Club and Book Review Club. She also was involved in the A.A.U.W. Book Sale, a Captain at the United Way, an elementary-school room-mother, a Girl Scout Brownie Leader, and political campaign fund raiser at the Volunteer Action Center.

Throughout her life, she maintained interests in bridge, flower-arranging, genealogy, knitting, concerts and theatre, reading, sailing, swimming, tennis, cross-country skiing and piano. Family and friends were drawn to her caring and warmth.

She is survived by a son, John Wilcox Howe Bartholomew (Morristown, NJ), a daughter, Margaret Washington Paige Bartholomew (Ft. Dodge, IA) a sister, Lucile Dickson Mansfield (Glen Mills, PA), and a brother, Admiral Jonathan Trumbull Howe (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL)

A memorial service will be held 1 pm Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Stark Funeral Professionals. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 11 am until time of service.
