Tamás (Tom) Markovits, aged 80 of Ypsilanti Michigan passed away peacefully on Monday March 27, 2023, at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born on May 25, 1942, in Budapest, Hungary to the late Márton Markovits and Ilona (Penzes) Markovits. At the age of 14, he escaped communist Hungary with his uncle and made his way to America.

On January 13, 1967, Tom married his forever love, Ursula (Zilger) Markovits in Giessen, Germany. Tom was a veteran of the US Army and a longtime member of the Hungarian American Cultural Center, the Hungarian Arts Club and the Hungarian Holy Cross Church. His passion was writing, and he wrote many poems. He loved reading his poems and acting in the Hungarian Theater Group. In the last few years, his favorite thing to do was to watch Dr. Pol.

He loved his family deeply and especially took great pride in his children and grandson. Tom is survived by his wife Ursula and children: Marton T. (Annie) Markovits of Ardmore, PA and Nicole S. Markovits of Ypsilanti, MI, with whom he shares a birthday.  Grandson: Lucas H. Markovits. Brother: Peter Podoski, as well as several cousins in Hungary and France and other beloved family members in Germany.

As his last act, Tom chose to donate his brain to the University of Michigan brain bank. He has been cremated. There will be no service. The family will hold a Celebration of Life party at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Michigan Brain Bank or the Hungarian American Cultural Center .
