Suzanne Mae Shaw was born on July 6, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the daughter of Myron "Susie" Schecter and Rose Schecter.

Suzanne was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life centered on family, community, and service. She is survived by her children: Michael Freund and his wife Michelle; Beth Ann (Freund) Manuel and her husband Curtis; David Freund; Daniel Shaw; and Debby Shaw.

She was a proud grandmother to Amanda (Freund) Smith; Sam Freund and his wife Carrie Negishi; Haley Haddad and her husband Charlie; and Nathan Manuel and his partner Anne Greene. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Casey Smith, Olivia Haddad, Henry Haddad, and George Haddad.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Allen Schecter, and her beloved dogs, Daisy and Bogie.

Suzanne graduated from Mumford High School in Detroit and went on to build a life defined by involvement and leadership. She was a proud Ypsilanti resident and a committed member of her community. Her accomplishments included serving as Washtenaw County Democratic Chair and as a Washtenaw County Commissioner. As a commissioner, she helped secure funding for the Delonis Center, a homeless shelter in Ann Arbor. She considered that the highlight of her tenure. She was also a small business entrepreneur, a lifelong volunteer, and a mentor to many.

Those closest to her knew Suzanne as someone who cared deeply about civic engagement, fairness, and encouraging others to participate and lead. Her passion for community and public service left a lasting impact.

The family has chosen simple cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ACLU , The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County , or Humane Society of Huron Valley ; AND if you vote, VOTE DEMOCRAT.
