Binder, Susan

Howell, MI (formerly of Ypsilanti and Whitmore Lake)

Age 94, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022. She was born January 10, 1928, the daughter of Karl and Gertrude (Hutchings) Brede of North Rosedale Park in Detroit.

After graduating from Redford High School, she went on to study at Alma College and then Michigan State University. While at MSU, Susan met her first husband, Robert Chandler Byrum, who preceded her in death at a very early age. After his passing, she moved to Ypsilanti to be closer to her sister, Margaret Adair, who also preceded her in death.

While in Ypsilanti, Susan raised her four children Thomas (Maryellen) Byrum, David (Cindy) Byrum, Sally (Douglas) Smith and Betsy Byrum (Mike Vandewiele). She taught at George Elementary School in Ypsilanti for many years. In 1976, she married Richard L. Binder, who also preceded her in death.

Susan was an accomplished quilter and enjoyed many hand crafts. She was a member of the Ladies' Literary Club and PEO Sisterhood.

After her time with the Ypsilanti Public Schools, she and Richard built a home on Whitmore Lake where they enjoyed many years of fun with family and friends.

Susan is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Doreen Binder.

A family memorial is being planned for next summer on Whitmore Lake. Contributions in Susan's memory may be made to Humane Society of Huron Valley or Arbor Hospice .
