Shirley Ellen Wilborn was born on April 23, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan where she spent her early years. She moved to California in her 20s where she immersed herself in the vibrant life of Los Angeles until she was blessed with the birth of her son, Jerome.

Soon after, she returned to Detroit, Michigan, and began her career at the Edison Bell Telephone Company, where she served with distinction until her retirement.

She was a fearless and spirited explorer, embracing every opportunity to broaden her horizons and savor the richness of life. Shirley was, above all, a devoted mother and grandmother—a Tiger Mom long before the term was coined. As the cornerstone of her family, she played a pivotal role in nurturing a close-knit community of over 40 nieces and nephews, instilling in them the values and strength that would guide them toward future success. As the matriarch of her family, she was instrumental not only in raising her son and grandchildren but also in guiding and nurturing all the children in her extended family. Her love, wisdom, and endless supply of sweets were constants in their lives.

Outside of work and family, Shirley found joy in the great outdoors. She was an adventurer at heart—whether skiing down alpine slopes or basking in the serenity of the water. A proud member of the Jim Dandy Ski Club, she traveled across Europe to conquer some of its most iconic summits.

A true fashionista, Shirley's impeccable style was matched only by her sharp wit and radiant smile—gifts she generously shared with everyone she met.

Shirley departed this life on September 29, 2025, joining her beloved siblings—Ladon, Delores, Gloria, Constance, Sonny (Ulysses), and Michael—in eternal rest. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Sonali; her grandchildren Samira, Grant, Reed, Anagha, and Anya; her great-granddaughters Aniyah and Amirah; and a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She will be deeply missed.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Stark Funeral Professionals (101 S. Washington Street, Ypsilanti). Visitation will begin at 12 pm. Burial to follow in Highland Cemetery, Ypsilanti.
