Sherry Ann Vandermeer, 73, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2023 with her family lovingly by her side. She was born in Paintsville, Kentucky, on Saturday, June 3, 1950, and lived most of her life in Michigan, in Ypsilanti and later in Midland.

Sherry was a loving wife and mother of three, and a devoted Christian who would often put the needs of her children and husband before her own. She worked tirelessly to give her sons the things that she never had growing up. Sherry attended Northwestern University, and she cared deeply about her childrens' education. She would help them study or drive them to the library for a class project without hesitation. She worked as a merchandising representative for Nabisco and in retail for a number of years in order to afford Christian school for her three boys.

Sherry's faith in God was her compass in life and it defined her character. Growing up, she had a difficult and often painful childhood, and lived through experiences that no one should ever have to endure. Yet, her faith never diminished in these experiences, and instead grew stronger. She looked forward to church every Sunday and could be heard singing hymns loudly in the pew with her fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, even on days when she struggled to get out of bed in the morning.

Sherry's love for children and her passion for helping those in need are what drove her to work as a volunteer for Kids Hope USA, where she mentored a number of at-risk youth at Eastlawn Elementary over the years. She would bring her students new books that they read together during recess, and she made sure that they had jackets and warm clothing for the winter.

Sherry was a writer of poetry and short stories, and an incredible homemaker who would drop everything to invite over a friend for a hot meal and company. She had an eye for interior design and with her green thumb, she built a beautiful garden with every season that passed.

Tragically, Sherry fought a long and hard battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as COPD, for fifteen years before leaving us to be with the Lord. She will be joining her parents Paul and Billie Wallen in heaven. She is survived by her husband, Thomas; her three sons, Zachary (Rachel), Joshua (Kimberly), and Peter (Laura); three grandchildren; as well as her sister, Victoria Begdorian. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at First Free Will Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, MI. Visitation begins at noon, and a service will follow at 1 pm.
