Shani McLoyd died peacefully on the morning of Friday, October 14, 2022, surrounded by family and friends at Arbor Hospice. Despite (and in spite of) a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis during her teenage years, Shani lived a full and vibrant life. Those who knew Shani will miss her radiant smile, positive outlook and entrepreneurial spirit.

After graduating from Pioneer High School, in 1995, she attended Spelman College, an experience that was personally transformative; here Shani met some of her closest friends and immersed herself in the joys of black womanhood. Following her time at Spelman, Shani interned with the US Department of State in Washington DC, and subsequently attended the University of Michigan School of Social Work where she graduated with an MSW. After spending many years as a therapist at Huron Valley Consultation Center, she opened a private therapy practice where she helped countless people find balance, improve their lives and become the people they hoped to be. Providing therapy to others was Shani's gift - one at which she excelled.

In addition to her profession, her other passion was exploring the world - always choosing to opt out of "safe trips" and to take the road less traveled. Shani visited countless corners of the globe including Denmark, France, England, Lebanon, Ghana, Costa Rica, Holland, Italy, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Jordan, Israel, Morocco, Nicaragua, Anguilla, South Africa and all over the United States. Wherever she ventured, people were amazed by Shani's spirit, tenacity and deep determination not to allow disability to direct her destiny. At the time of her passing, Shani was planning a trip to Brazil with her best friend Charmin Archer.

Shani leaves behind a deep and devoted network of loved ones. She is survived by her mother (and biggest champion) Sylvia Jones; father Lander (Sheila) McLoyd; partner Matt Yockey; sister Keli McLoyd; brothers Tiga (Tomo) McLoyd and Will Smith; nephews Chenzi, TJ and Taka; and niece Maya.

She was preceded in death by her brother Chike (Garlen) McLoyd.

Shani was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation (ECI), a progressive Episcopalian congregation and Interfaith Community. Shani's family is planning a vibrant, joyful, celebration of her life this summer and will provide details closer to the date.
