Paul Wayne Metler, age 71, passed away on March 27, 2026, at his home in Dexter, MI. Paul was born on September 3, 1954, in Berwyn, IL, to John Wayne Metler and Lois Eleanor (Jackson) Metler. Paul lived in Berwyn, IL; Montclair, NJ; and Dexter, MI but spent most of his life in Ypsilanti, MI. His life was abundantly filled by connection and service.

On November 12, 1975, Paul married Susan Kay Patterson at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Ypsilanti. Together, they built a family rooted in love and laughter.

Paul devoted his life's work to serving others through food and hospitality. Having a remarkable 50-year career, including his time with Zingerman's Bakehouse, Zingerman's Delicatessen and Seva. Throughout his life, he fed and connected with people from all walks of life. For Paul, it was never just about the meal, it was about the people, the conversations and the care behind it. His "retirement" was simply a continuation of that same spirit of service.

He was deeply committed to his community, generously volunteering with organizations such as Hope Clinic, Growing Hope, Oasis Café, Salvation Army Meals, and Food Gatherers. He also found strength and fellowship through attending support groups, always offering encouragement, kindness, and a listening ear.

Paul embraced life fully. He loved reading, learning, meeting new people, cooking, and sharing meals. Known for his warm hugs and welcoming presence, Paul had a deep appreciation for music especially the sounds of Cream, The Who, Iggy Pop, Queen, and The Beatles. Above all, he cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren, who were the center of his world.

He is survived by his spouse, Susan Metler; his children, Arista (Jason) Williams, Zachary (Stephanie) Metler, Nathan (Christy) Metler, and Hannah (Brandon) Bedinger; and his cherished grandchildren, Ryan Ostrowski, Jason "Bubba" Williams, Marie Metler, Lucy Metler, Leo Metler, Annabelle Metler, Drew Metler, Ezra Metler, and Simone Bedinger. He is also survived by his sister, Susan (Robert) Henry.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lois Metler.

A visitation will be held 3-8 pm on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at Stark Funeral Professionals (101 S. Washington Street, Ypsilanti).

A Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 1 pm, also at Stark Funeral Professionals, with Jesse Wilson officiating. In honor of Paul's vibrant spirit and love of life, guests are encouraged to wear something colorful rather than traditional black attire.

He will be cremated and eventually laid to rest at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to FedUp Ministries , Food Gatherers , or Growing Hope . These organizations reflect Paul's lifelong dedication to feeding and caring for others.

Paul's life was a gift of generosity, warmth, and connection. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
