Nelson L. O'Bryan, age 90, of Ypsilanti, MI, passed away from complications related to Parkinson's Disease on Thursday, July 11, 2024. He was born in Van Lear, KY, a coal-mining town in Eastern Kentucky. He was the only living child of five siblings from the union of Lonnie Lee and Flora Bell Skaggs-O'Bryan. Nelson attended Van Lear Schools through eleventh grade, then moved with his parents to Ypsilanti, MI, where he graduated from Ypsilanti High School with the class of 1953.

In June 1957, Nelson was drafted into the Army and served in Germany as a Weapons Specialist and Radio Dispatcher Repairman. He completed his military commitment at the Recruitment Center in Ann Arbor, MI. In 1972, Nelson became a certified Master Locksmith and was recruited for the University of Michigan in 1980, where he worked until his retirement in 1999. He then opened his own Locksmith and Security Services at home which he operated until his recent passing.

Nelson was well-known in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor community because of his locksmith expertise. He provided services to the Sheriff department, Ypsilanti and State police, Judges, the Ypsilanti Eagles/Moose Club and the American Legion Post 282 for almost 20 years. He was Post Commander for three terms. Known for his patience, kindness and generosity, he was always willing to help others, especially veterans. He also took time to teach locksmithing classes at several automobile plants. Nelson was a natural leader and great organizer. He served for 21 years in the Michigan Boys State, a national civics leadership program, including four terms as director. He served as organizer and narrator for the American Legion's Fourth of July parade for 10 years.

Per his wishes, Nelson's body was donated to the U of M Anatomical Society Medical School, where his cremains will be interred. A Memorial Service may take place there sometime in the Spring of 2025, TBD. Some cremains will also be placed in the family plot in Paintsville, KY.

Nelson is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marion O'Bryan and their "Super Dog" Buddy. He will be remembered for his love of family and keen sense of humor. He will be missed.
