Miguel Cortez Kersey was born February 1, 1972, in Grand Rapids, MI. He was raised in Ypsilanti, MI by his father Norman Kersey, mother Rita Kersey, along with his bonus mom Ruth Small.

Miguel attended Ypsilanti Public Schools and was a proud graduate of the class of 1990. He received his HVAC Certification from Dorsey College in 2016. Miguel loved sports, especially football, and was a member of the football team while in high school. Miguel was also a member of Community Church of God growing up and was very active in Senior Youth and the youth choir.

Miguel was a man with many talents. His strength was in his passion for working with his hands and working with people. He used these gifts in many positions including running a successful lawn care and snow removal business with his father and working for Ypsilanti Community Schools, Milan Community Schools, and Splash Universe. Miguel transitioned to facilities work after moving to Virginia in 2021 where he blended these gifts in the role of Facilities Manager at Woodleigh Chase Senior Living. He was a problem solver and a people person who made a positive impact wherever he went.

Miguel loved life. No matter what he was facing with his health, he always had a smile, laugh, or encouraging words. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his wife Martina, family and friends. He also enjoyed traveling and actively sought out new experiences and adventures. He was U of M's #1 fan and was fond of cooking, collecting, and dabbling with turn tables and a beat. Miguel was loving, funny, gentle, giving, and kind.

Miguel was a devoted father and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

On January 20, 2026, after a long and courageous fight with kidney disease, Miguel quietly went to sleep and transitioned to his eternal home.

Miguel was preceded in death by his father Noman D. Kersey and his sister Donna Hudson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Martina Vit, his mother Rita Kersey, bonus mother Ruth Small, his heart and first born, Lexus U. Kersey and daughters Emari Hall-Vit, Ilana Hall-Vit, and Gabi Hall-Vit; grandchildren Khari J Howard, Ariah Howard, Aubrey Stovall, and Chi Graham; his sister Bridget Kersey, and bonus siblings M. Yvonne, Cathy, Harvey, Anthony, Doreen, and Windy; sister cousins Monique and Stacey; his fur baby Roc Demarcus Kersey, aunts Nonna, Anita, and Shirley; uncles, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends that were more like family.

A funeral service will be held 1 pm Friday, January 30, 2026 at Community Church of God (565 Jefferson Street, Ypsilanti) with family hour beginning at 12 pm. The family will receive friends 4-8 pm Thursday, January 29, 2026 at Stark Funeral Professionals (101 S. Washington Street, Ypsilanti).
