Louis Gilbert Davis, affectionately known as Gates, was born on September 3, 1952, to Dorothy Lee Davis and Donald Morris Davis Sr. He was a natural storyteller, a master prankster, and a joyful presence who brought laughter to every room.

For 50 years, Gates worked as a master presser, a skill he learned from his stepfather, Joseph Smith. He became an expert in his craft, working at Gold Bond Cleaners and owning a tux shop where he ensured others looked just as sharp as he always did.

Gates married his beloved wife, Jacina, and together they shared 47 years of love, dancing through their partnership. As devoted parents, they cared fiercely for their children, Lamar and Heather, and their foster daughter, Patricia "Keshia" Robinson. Gates cherished his role as a grandfather to Jett James Avant, who was his pride and joy.

In 1996, Gilbert was baptized alongside his son Lamar under the leadership of Reverend S.L. Roberson at Metropolitan Memorial Baptist Church. He faithfully served as a deacon, usher, sound technician, and maintenance engineer, always ensuring things ran smoothly. Cooking for the children's ministry and singing in the Men's Choir brought him special joy.

On March 11, 2025, Gilbert peacefully traded his work apron for a white robe. While his family wasn't ready to say goodbye, they find comfort knowing heaven gained a funny, hardworking, and kindhearted soul.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy (Joseph) Smith; and father, Donald (Janice) Davis Sr. He leaves behind his wife, Jacina Davis; son, Lamar (Nicole) Davis; daughter, Heather (Jason) Avant; grandson, Jett James Avant; siblings, Donald (Dolores) Davis Jr., Ross Davis, Gary (Renea) Davis, Clinton (Kina) Davis, Edith Chance, Beverley (Robert) Elliott, Thelma (Kenneth) Harding, and Pamela Davis; along with ten nieces and nephews, fourteen great-nieces and nephews, and a host of cherished friends.
