Ashby, Lola Evelyn

Age 101, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at Gilbert Residence in Ypsilanti, MI. She was born April 4, 1923 in Grand Rapids, OH to Frank and Alta (Adams) Overy. On January 15, 1943, she married Forrest Ashby in Long Beach, CA and he preceded her in death March 2001.

Lola was a Rosie Riveter at Willow Run during World War II. She had a varied career, working as a telephone company operator, seamstress and a secretary for Joe Paschall Apartments at different points in her life. A loyal parishioner of Forest Avenue Baptist Church for over 60 years, Lola also volunteered for Salvation Army and Catholic Social Services. She was famous for her homemade noodles.

In addition to her loving husband of 58 years, Lola was preceded in death by her grandson Greg Caldwell, parents, eight sisters and two brothers. She leaves behind two daughters, Cheryl Thornell of Fishers, IN and Cathy (Larry) Bennett of Ypsilanti; four grandchildren, Derek (Lesly) Caldwell, Sara Caldwell, Kent (Kristin) Thornell and Amanda (Jeremy) Welu; seven great-grandchildren, Erica (Justin) Brewer, Alayna Caldwell, Ryan Caldwell, Hudson Welu, Savannah Welu, Jensen Welu and Teagan Thornell; and two great-great-grandchildren, Scottie Brewer and Madison Brewer.

A funeral service will be held 1 pm Monday, March 31, 2025 at Stark Funeral Professionals (101 S. Washington Street, Ypsilanti). The family will receive friends at the funeral home 3-6 pm Sunday, March 30, 2025 and 12 pm until time of service Monday. Lola will be laid to rest in Highland Cemetery, Ypsilanti. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Arbor Hospice .
