Leonard Dave Hunter, age 76, passed away October 25, 2025, at Michigan Medicine Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was born October 18, 1949, in Gary, Indiana, the son of David W. and Marion Thasellus (Godfrey) Hunter.

Leonard dedicated his life to education, teaching in various school districts including Thurston and Ferndale High Schools, and later serving as an adjunct marketing professor at Baker College. Over his 22-year teaching career, he inspired countless students before retiring in 2014.

He earned his B.S. in Petroleum Distribution and his MBA in Finance from Western Michigan University, a teaching certificate and vocational endorsement from Eastern Michigan University, and an Educational Specialist degree in General Administration and Supervision from Wayne State University.

Leonard's faith was central to his life. He was a member of Community Church of God, where he participated in Bible classes, and previously served as a lay minister leader at Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield.

He enjoyed golfing, watching Turner Classic Movies, and spending time with his grandchildren. A man of many talents, he was a certified real estate salesperson and a certified driver's education instructor, as well as the author of Building a Good Driver (2018).

Leonard lived in several Michigan communities throughout his life, including Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Okemos, Canton, and Ypsilanti Township. On September 1, 2018, he married Claudia Young at Brown Chapel in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

He is survived by his loving wife, Claudia Young Hunter; father, David W. Hunter; sisters Diana Hunter, Irene Hunter, and Ilene Stevenson; brothers Lawrence and Gregory Hunter; daughters Leah Hunter, Danielle (Bryan) Williams, and Rebecca (Clayton) Reed; grandchildren Lilah Bazzel, Tabitha, Luke, and Jude Reed; step-daughters Azara Alexander, Amir (Robert) Alexander Young, and Shalome Alexander Yovo Sowah; step-sons Akil (Chastity), Azar (Antonio), Ahmid, and Terrance Alexander; step-grandchildren Zion and Anthony Alexander, Dezaria, Denaz, and Dunamis Taylor, Tatianna Broadway, Jaden and Sasha Young, and Zachary Nelson; niece Serena Rorex; nephews Johnny Brown, Robert (Robin) Stevenson, Scott Stevenson, and Edwin Hunter; along with a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Thasellus Godfrey Hunter, and step-grandsons Gianni Young and Antonio Cooper.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Community Church of God, with Rev. Portia L. Davis-Mann officiating. The family hour will begin at 1 pm. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, Ypsilanti.

Leonard will be remembered for his deep faith, passion for teaching, love of learning, and devotion to family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
