Judith Ruth Haswell Scanlon

Judith Ruth Haswell Scanlon, age 98, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was born on November 12, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late James M. and Joyce D. Haswell.

Judith dedicated her professional life to education, working as a librarian for Livonia Public Schools until her retirement in 1984. Even after retiring, she continued to share her love of learning and literature by volunteering as a librarian at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Glacier Hills, and the Reichert Center.

She found joy in reading, gardening, cross-stitch, and traveling. Judith and her beloved husband, Earl Scanlon, shared a special bond—including a birthday. Their love and companionship endured through the years, and she now joins him in rest.

Judith is survived by her children: Kathryn Scanlon, James (Maura Poshka) Scanlon, Mary (Don) Plews, and Barbara Scanlon; her grandchildren: Patrick (Beth) Plews, Emily (Rob Morton) Plews, Melanie (Mark) McCarthy, and Kristen (Adam Swejk) Plews; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl, her parents, and her sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Rhudy Bell.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, August 4, 2025, at Stark Funeral Professionals, with visitation beginning at 10 am. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Scleroderma Foundation in Judith's honor.
