The world feels a little quieter as we say goodbye to Joseph Mitchell, a cherished parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, and the heart of our family. Joseph entered eternal rest on May 30, 2026, at the age of 63 in Milan, Michigan.

Many knew him as Joey or Joe. To his kids, he was our lifeline, our forever friend and protector, a jack of all trades and master of some.

Joe was born on May 6, 1963, to Joseph and Diane Mitchell of Belleville. He was one of five siblings: Joann (Carvil) Addington, Carole Gambrel, Debra (John) Hagerman, and David Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carole.

Joe attended Belleville schools but ultimately did not complete his education. He started working on cars at a young age and continued throughout his life, making it his lifelong career.

He married Elizabeth in 1987, and together they had three children: Christina, Jessica, and Joseph Jr. (Jay) Mitchell. He later remarried Margaret, whose three children also became part of the family.

Joseph is survived by his children and grandchildren: Joslyn, Lillie, and Reid Florian, and Jackson Kivi; his siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved very deeply.

Family meant the world to Joe, as did his friends. He would give anyone the shirt off his back—literally, as the man never wore a shirt if he didn't have to. He was always willing to help, no matter the circumstance, and would go out of his way to show up for people, even on days when he could barely walk or use his hands.

Joe was always working on something, whether it was outside or in a garage. He took pride in his yard and in the work he did fixing cars. Most recently, he was restoring his old Ford pickup.

His passions included working on cars, hunting with his kids, watching wrestling, and showing up for his children and grandchildren—always bringing snacks and drinks. He worked every day, even when his body was fighting him. He carried a world of burdens and dealt with them the only way he knew how.

During the last few years of his life, he was fortunate enough to spend day in and day out with his son Jay. More than anything, he loved watching his children succeed in life and never missed an opportunity to tell anyone who would listen how proud he was of them.

Joe was beloved by so many. Life will surely not feel the same without him. His presence is something that can never be forgotten or replaced.
