Age 81, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023. He was born March 24, 1942, in Ypsilanti, MI, the son to Harvel and Eleen (Allen) Hayes; and Mildred (Sexton) Hayes.

In October of 1962 he married Sandra Shaver in Ypsilanti, MI and she preceded him in death on December 22, 2020. Jerry worked as a teacher for Ypsilanti Public Schools for 26 years, retiring in 1999. He was a mentor and coach for Ypsilanti Public Schools. For many years, Jerry was a great supporter of EMU Athletics through volunteering his time on game day as a booster. He spent many years working the game day table at EMU for both men and women's basketball. He also worked the scoreboard for EMU football. He loved traveling with friends to play golf. Jerry had a great love for his family and Ypsilanti.

Survivors include son Jerry Hayes Jr., daughters Jennifer (Wayne) Purdy and Jamie Fear; brother Jim Allen, seven grandchildren, Kylie and Tyler Purdy, Lauren and Emily Hayes, Brittany Reeves and Nicole and Zach Fear; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, sister Carol Reed, and brothers Duane Hayes, Bill and George Allen.

A viewing will be held 2-8 pm Friday, July 28, 2023, at Stark Funeral Professionals. A funeral service will be held 11 am Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Stark Funeral Professionals. Pastor John White will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 10 am until time of service. Jerry will be laid to rest in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Canton.
