Barrios, Javier Fernando

Ypsilanti, MI

Age 53, passed away Friday, November 4, 2022 at his home in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He was born May 19, 1969 in Lima, Peru, the son of Fernando and Myriam (Ramos) Barrios. Javier grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico where he attended Academia del Perpetuo Socorro. He was a talented artist and also excelled in History, English and Spanish Literature.

Javier earned a Bachelor's degree in History from Columbia University in 1992 and a Master's degree in History from the University of Michigan in 1995. He retired recently due to illness after over 15 years of teaching Spanish and History at several institutions including Hillsdale College, Eastern Michigan University, Jackson Community College and Spring Arbor College. Javier also taught Spanish to inmates at the Cooper Street Correctional Facility in Jackson, MI.

In his free time, Javier enjoyed reading, travel, collecting antiques, visiting his family in Peru and spending time with his beloved dogs Pepa, Nino and Benny.

Javier is survived by his sister Claudia Barrios of Miami Beach, FL; niece Ela Semerci of Los Angeles, CA; niece Lara Semerci of Miami Beach, FL; and his dogs Pepa, Nino and Benny.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 5 pm Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Javier's residence. Donations in his memory can be made if desired to the Humane Society of Huron Valley .
