Obituary

Deborah Lee Orlowski was born on May 3, 1950, to the parents of Leo and Geraldine Orlowski in Buffalo, New York. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, partner and devoted friend. Throughout her life, Deborah was a woman who believed deeply in loving, and helping others become the best versions of themselves.

She attended Sweet Home High School before continuing her education at the University of Michigan, then her master’s at the Eastern Michigan University, and ultimately her Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities at California Institute of Integral Studies. She dedicated many years of her life to her work at the University of Michigan where she taught personal development before retiring.

Deborah was loving, joyful, and deeply accepting. She had a special ability to help people grow while making them feel accepted exactly as they were. She laughed—loudly and often. Her laughter was unmistakable, and those who knew her will remember the joy and life she brought into a room.

Deborah was married to Alex Cave, and together they had raised three sons: Andrew, Brandon, and Evan. Although their marriage eventually ended in divorce, being a mother remained one of the most important parts of Deborah’s life.

One of Deborah’s greatest joys was becoming a grandmother. She adored her three grandchildren, and they loved their GMA deeply in return. She chose the name “GMA” for herself, and it became a name filled with love, warmth, and special memories, to her grandchildren Turuu, Maria, and Xaviar. They will carry that love with them throughout their lives, along with the memories of their GMA and all the ways she made them feel loved.

Above all, Deborah loved jazz music. Jazz spoke to something in her—its freedom, emotion, energy, and individuality. It seems fitting that a woman who lived with such openness and personality would love music that could be both soulful and free.

Later in her life, Deborah shared a meaningful relationship with her boyfriend Craig, who was an important part of her life and her journey.

Deborah leaves behind her countless friends whose lives she touched through her childhood, work, friendship, compassion, and love.

Those who knew Deborah will remember her not only for what she accomplished, but for how she made people feel. She made people feel accepted and loved, she encouraged people to grow, and she reminded people to be brave enough to be themselves.

Deborah’s life was a gift. Her love was a gift. And her memory will remain with us always.

May she rest peacefully, surrounded forever by the love she gave to so many.
