Arnold, Jesse Junior
Arnold, Jesse Junior Ypsilanti, MI Age 82, passed away Monday, June 16, 2008 at home. He was born May 2, 1926 in Huntland, TN, the son of Albert and Annie Pearl (Grammer) Arnold. Jesse served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On June 22, 1946, he married Jewel Walker in Huntsville, AL and she preceded him in death March 26, 2001. Jesse was self-employed as an antique dealer and he loved to fish. Survivors include- one daughter, Kaye (Brian) Ewalt of Brooklyn, MI; one son, Larry (Carol) Arnold of Belleville; six grandchildren, Rhonda (Michael) Smith, Ronnie (Kim) Arnold, Larry (Jennifer) Arnold, David (Jennifer) Arnold, Robin (Ewalt) Heiler and Abbey Ewalt; seven great grandchildren, Shelby, Zack, Travis, Olivia, Hannah, Sarah and Taylor; one sister, Ozell of TN; close family friend, Dorothy Bunck; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and five brothers. Brashaw, Jacob Matthew Ypsilanti, MI Infant son of Cotton and Angela (Ferguson) Brashaw died Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Mott Children’s Hospital. He was born June 8, 2008. In addition to his parents, survivors include- maternal grandparents, Earl and Shelly VanValkenburg; paternal grandmother, Kathy (Ray) Douglas; paternal grandfather, Cotton Brashaw, Sr.; two aunts, Rebecca (James) McQueen and Jennifer Brashaw; and two cousins. Bullock, Brenda Sue Ypsilanti, MI Age 51, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2008. She was born May 9, 1957 in San Francisco, CA. She came to the Ypsilanti area in 1972 and graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1975. Survivors include- her parents, Betty and Gene Buczek; one daughter, Christy Ann Bullock; two grandchildren, her pride and joy, Chase Michael and Maddelynne Olivia; two brothers, Michael and Richard Buczek; one sister, Vicki (Ron) Montgomery; two nieces, Erica and Chelsea and one nephew, Ryan; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Davis, Ruth
Davis, Ruth (Fox) Belleville, MI Age 87, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2008 in Columbia, SC. She was born May 21, 1921 in Toledo, OH, to Wilson and Mae (daily) Fox. On October 24, 1942 she married Carl E. Davis in Toledo, and he preceded her in death on June 6, 1960. Survivors include- two sons, Craig W. Davis and Terry E. Davis; granddaughters, Theresa, Julie and Jennifer Davis; grandson Jonathan Davis; great-grandchildren Lindsay and Liam. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, a sister and one grandson. Mrs. Davis graduated from the University of Toledo in 1943 and from the University of Michigan in 1947 with a Library Science Degree. She worked for the Romulus Community Schools as a high school librarian for 30 years. In retirement she served as a volunteer in the Gerald Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, and a lifetime member of the University of Michigan Alumni Society. She was also a member of the U of M School of Information Alumni Society, the Belleville Chapter #73 Order of Eastern Star, the Golden Hour Club (city of Wayne), Past President’s Club of the Belleville BPW, the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, and the AARP. Duede, Crystal Virginiarose
Duede, Crystal Virginiarose Ypsilanti, MI Age 81, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008 peacefully at home with her family by her side. Crystal was born September 8, 1926 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of the late Milo and Margaret (Brown) Ballard. On December 21, 1963, she married Ralph E. Duede. Crystal had been a resident of Ypsilanti all of her life and prior to her illness, was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Belleville. Crystal was an LPN and retired from the Ypsilanti State Psychiatric Hospital in 1965. She was an artist and loved all media. She also made and was an avid collector of dolls, enjoyed beadwork crochet, sewing, jewelry-making and spending time with her friends and family. Survivors include- her husband, Ralph; daughter, Faith (Robert Hubbard) Duede; step-grandson, Adam Hubbard of Ocean Springs, MS; one sister, Barbara Havens of McBain; one brother, Jesse (Diane) Ballard of Washington; and many very dear nieces and nephews, as well as her husband’s family. Farmer, Bruce M.
Farmer, Bruce M. Saline, MI (formerly of Ypsilanti) Age 48, passed away Friday, June 27, 2008 at home. He was born January 23, 1960 in Ypsilanti, the son of J.D. and Marna (Dawson) Farmer. On December 14, 2007, he married Lezlie Allison in Toledo and she survives. Bruce worked at American Soy Products in Saline and was a member of The M.R.C.A. Flying Club. He loved to hunt, fish and camp. In addition to his wife, survivors include- one daughter, Erin Farmer of AZ; one son, Alex Farmer of Saline; four stepdaughters, Erin, Megan, Cecilia and Stephanie, all of Livonia; his parents, J.D. and Marna Farmer of Ypsilanti; one sister, Debbie (Sam) Argiero of Pinckney; one brother, Barry (Laura) Farmer of Imlay City, MI; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Lowell’s
ashes
will
be
interred
next
to
his
parents.

Herlocher, Gerald C. Milan, MI Age 71, passed away June 08, 2008 peacefully at home with his family at his side. Mr. Herlocher was born June 24, 1936 in Sugar Valley, PA, the son of Harvey and Elizabeth (Alford) Herlocher. Gerald moved to Michigan in 1956, and married Virginia Mae (Wardle) Herlocher on June 21, 1958. He retired from Huron Tower Apartments in June 2007. Surviving are his wife Virginia and six children; Wavie (husband Fred) Barton of Zephyrhills, FL, Mary (husband Duane) Rudy of North Branch, MI, Raymond (wife Anne) Herlocher of Maybee, MI, Lisa Perry of Tecumseh, MI, Anita (husband Barry) Paul of Milan, MI and Loretta McCready of South Lyon, MI. Also surviving are Gerald’s 12 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, one brother Horace Orie (wife Mary) Herlocher of Loganton, PA, one sister in-law Leona (Wardle) Winkle of Belleville, MI and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel (husband Abe) Paulhaumies of PA, Alfred (wife Loraine) Herlocher of TX, Edward (wife Ruth) Herlocher of New York, Harvey (wife Mildred) Herlocher of PA, Carl (wife Rebecca) Porth of PA, Clare (wife Violet) Porth of PA, one brother in-law Wilbur Paul Winkle of MI and one grandson; Kenneth Raymond Hamilton of MI. Hitchingham, Lela (Pearce) Augusta Twp., MI Age 93, died Sunday, June 08, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community (Townsley Village). She was born May 17, 1915 in Hillsdale, Michigan to Clayton and Agnes (Fuller) Pearce. On October 23, 1937 she married Russell A.”Red” Hitchingham in Grand Rapids and he preceded her in death on August 5, 2004. Lela graduated with honors from Camden-Frontier High School in Hillsdale County, MI and was employed prior to marriage at the Ypsilanti State Hospital. After she married she settled into the role of a traditional farm housewife. She was devoted to her husband “Red” and her six children. Lela attended Lincoln Community United Methodist Church and was active in many church service groups, functions and activities. She enjoyed cooking and baking and supported service lunches and dinners sponsored by the church. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will all tell you that she was an excellent cook and baker. Lela also enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens and shared their bounty with family, friends and neighbors. She was an active supporter of the Lincoln Consolidated Schools while her children attended and an advocate of higher education. She encouraged all six of her children to attend and graduate from college and due to her support and encouragement, her children were successful in achieving 100% of that goal. Survivors include four sons; Larry (Dawn) , Clayton (Eileen)., Philip, and Kevin, two daughters Bonnie, Marcia (Dean) Anderson, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, two sisters Ethel Harmon and Janet House. Hoeman, Carol Ypsilanti, MI Age 81, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008. She was born July 14, 1926 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of William and Carol (Coleman) Fensch. She was married to Paul G. Hoeman for 37 years before he preceded her in death. Carol was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Survivors include- her son, Jeffery (Marilyn) Hoeman and grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler, all of Canton; brother, William Fensch of Deerfield Glade, TN; brother- and sister-in-law, Roger and Shirley Hoeman of Louisiana; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Johnson, Robert “Bob” Ypsilanti, MI Age 71, passed away suddenly Sunday, June 15, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born June 10, 1937 in South Haven, MI, the son of Harold C. and Lydia E. (Kramp) Johnson. On June 18, 1977, he married Cindy Dubay in Mt. Clemens and she survives. Bob worked for the Environmental Protection Agency for over 30 years. He was retired from the Naval Reserve and was a member of the Yankee Air Force. In addition to his loving wife of 31 years, survivors include- two daughters, Nicole (Jason) Glovier of St. Clair Shores and Heather (Steven) Mezzadri of Livonia; and one grandson, Benjamin. Koons, Barbara J. “Barb” Belleville, MI Age 81, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008 following an extended illness. She was born April 9, 1927 in Flint, MI. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Ypsilanti Moose and the Belleville F.O.E. Lentz, Agnes Milan, MI Age 84 died June 26, 2008 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born May 13, 1924 in Ypsilanti to Buirl and Clara (Cook) Baer. On April 26, 1947 she married Bob Lentz in Whittaker and he preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 2007. Mrs. Lentz was an active member of the Lincoln Community United Methodist, the Ruth Circle and church vocalist. She drove bus for Lincoln and Milan Schools for over 35 years and volunteered for Aid in Milan for over 20 years. Survivors include a son- Kenneth of Maybee, a daughter Ellen (Kevin) Patton and granddaughter Krista Leah Patton of Willis and three nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, a half-sister Laura, a sister Margaret Chie, and a half brother Wilson. Smith, Mattie Rialto, CA (formerly of Ypsilanti) Age 87, passed away Monday, June 9, 2008 in California. She married J.P. Smith in 1949 and he preceded her in death. She had been a long-time resident of Ypsilanti before moving to CA. She was a member of Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ in Willow Run. Survivors include- her son, Cecil (Iris) Rice; daughter, Gwen Minnieweather; son, Emmanuel Smith; son, Timothy Smith; and brother, Rufus (Alice) Hart. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two children, James Edward Rice and Pearl Wilkerson, three brothers and two sisters. Mildred was born October 11, 1924 in Middlesboro, KY, the daughter of Roscoe and Bessie (Reynolds) Bryant. On Dec. 24, 1941, she married Carl Smith in Middlesboro and he preceded her in death May 24, 2003. Survivors include- one daughter, Brenda (Bill) Bartley of Ypsilanti; one granddaughter, Renee (Scott) Peach of Ypsilanti; two great grandchildren, Brandon and Hayley; one sister, Dana Jarrett of Canton; six brothers, Hayden Bryant of Canton, J.R. (Doris) Bryant, James (Carol) Bryant, Jerry (Theresa Hadley) Bryant, all of Ypsilanti, Rev. Larry (Cuma) Bryant of Cleveland, TN and Robert (Rhonda) Bryant of Colorado Springs, CO; and many nieces and nephews. Smith, Vivian J. Alpena, MI (formerly of the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area) Age 99, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at home in Alpena. Vivian was born September 9, 1908 in Detroit, the daughter of William E. and Edith (Bach) Carter. She graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit. On June 7, 1934, she married Arnold Smith in Detroit and he preceded her in death December 21, 1989. She had been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ypsilanti and a life member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Cyrus Chapter #458 in Detroit. Vivian is survived by- her daughter, Janet (James) Hines of Alpena; three grandchildren, Karen (Jon) Newhouse of Alpena, Laurie L. Dethloff of Pinckney and Mark (Dawn) Bell of Saline; seven great grandchildren, Laura Beth and Mandy Newhouse, Shanna, Niki, Jon and Jason Dethloff, David Hanna; and one great great grandson, Conner Hanna. Squires, Ransom E. “Sock” Milan Twp., MI Age 84 died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at home. He was born March 23, 1924 in Milan Township to Ransom E. and Nora Belle (Downing) Squires, Sr. On October 28, 1944 he married his high school sweetheart Laura May Grassley at London United Methodist Church and she survives. “Sock” graduated from Milan High School in 1941 then served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific. After returning home to the family farm where his was born, he continued farming all his life. He was a member of London United Methodist Church. He enjoyed going to the county fairs where he was a life member of Michigan Pony Dynamometer and was involved with the Monroe County Pony Pullers for several years. Besides his wife Laura May, he is survived by their son Ronald (Sally) of Britton, three grandsons, Steven (Laura) of Commerce Township, Jonathan (Toni) of Newport and Matthew (Becky) of Elyria, Ohio, four granddaughters Tonya (Mark) McMahan of Ft. Wayne, IN, Thelma (Joshua) Caldwell of Auburn, IN, Kathy (Cliff) Hall and Rachel (Jason) Clausen of Coruna, IN, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Elsie Porter, Alice Haystead one brother Leon Squires. Witcher, Jane Marie Saline, formerly of Milan Age 69 died Sunday, June 08, 2008 in Brighton at her daughter’s house, following an extended illness. She was born January 1, 1939 in Ann Arbor to Hugo and Laura (Tower) Schneider. Jane graduated from Ann Arbor High in 1956. She was an executive secretary for Washtenaw County Building Operations and then retired from Community Mental Health-OBRA in March of 2000. She was a member of the Peoples Presbyterian Church in Milan and the Red Hat Society of Saline. Survivors include a son Scott and his children Ian and Joshua of Loveland, CO., a daughter Lisa (Brian) Wheeler of Brighton and a brother Hugo Schneider of Arizona. She was preceded in death by two sisters Ruth Rolston and Norma Schunk. Jane had a passion for pottery, was an avid designer, artist, and took pride in her beautiful garden. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11-00am Thursday, June 19th at the Peoples Presbyterian Church, Milan. Wyman, Carl N. Milan, MI Age 74, died Friday morning, June 27, 2008 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 21, 1934 in Newton, Georgia to Benjamin and Frances (Emberling) Wyman. On June 8, 1956 he married Donna Mitchell and she survives. Carl was employed for over 13 years by D. N. Higgins, and was active in the Milan Moose Lodge #335, acting as Governer, Junior Governer, Prelet, and the Best Bingo Caller. He loved Bluegrass music and festivals, NASCAR, and his great-grandchildren. Survivors besides his wife include his son Stephen C. (Millie) Wyman, two grandchildren, Stephen (Sarah) Wyman, and Shannon (Chris) Spaulding, 4 step grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, Payton, Brice, and Christopher Jr., and 7 step grandchildren, one brother Russell (Donna) Wyman, two sisters; Mary Tuttle and June Lewis, friends Bill and Shirley Edler and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, three brothers-in-law, and four nephews. Visitation will be held at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan (today) Sunday from 2-8pm with a Moose Memorial service at 7pm. Funeral services will be held 11-00am Monday at the funeral home.
